Abstract

According to the World Health Organization, disability is the result of the interaction between health conditions and social barriers. The inclusion of children with disabilities in schools, especially in early childhood education, is essential for building a more equitable and welcoming society. This study sought to understand the perceptions of early childhood education children about disability, in order to contribute to reflections on school inclusion. This is a qualitative research study, conducted in a basic education school, with children aged 3 to 6 years who have disabilities or who live with peers with disabilities. Data collection occurred through focus groups, observation, and field diary entries. The thematic categories identified were: perception of disability, difficulties and potential in relationships, and doubts and curiosities about disability. The results reveal the need for educational practices that promote the recognition of diversity and the construction of an inclusive school culture.
