Abstract

This article describes the translation process of a game designed for learning mathematical concepts through sign language, developed for children, as well as the first test conducted with a group of deaf and hearing students. The game, called GIM (Inclusive Glossary of Mathematical Terms), aims to explore location terms (such as "above," "below," "behind," etc.) and numerals. It was created by researchers at Universidade Lusófona (Portugal) in Portuguese Sign Language (LGP) and translated into Libras by researchers at UNICAMP. The results show that the translation process requires an understanding of the cultural specificities of the oral and sign languages used in both countries. During the initial test of the game, both deaf and hearing children showed interest in the activity of locating the animals. However, imitating the phrases with localization concepts was of interest to the deaf children, but not to the hearing children.
