Abstract

This article analyzes the narratives of two lower-secondary school teachers regarding their teaching practices for reading comprehension, based on their use of a selected Portuguese textbook. Our objective is to reflect on whether the discourse surrounding the pedagogical approaches adopted aligns with current research on reading and text comprehension. Our theoretical framework draws on the work of Marcuschi (2001, 2008), Antunes (2003), Messias (2013), Moita Lopes (2021) and Georgakopoulou (2006, 2007), among others. This is an exploratory, qualitative, and descriptive study. The results show that the teachers are unfamiliar with research on reading comprehension and rely on the textbook's questions both for lesson development and for designing assessment activities.
