Abstract

This article aims at characterizing the teaching work prescribed and carried out in an English class on a Professional Qualification course. We seek to answer the following question: How does the teacher adapt the prescriptive document to teach English in the Professional Qualification course? We conducted a qualitative-interpretative research (Flick, 2004), which is also characterized as a case study (Leffa, 2006). The research context is the Professional Qualification in Basic English for Tourism, and the collaborator is the course's English teacher. The data to describe the prescribed work comes from the lesson plan; on the other hand, to characterize the teaching work performed, we use the Instruction to the Double related to the lesson. We conclude that the work carried out converges with the prescribed and with the modality of the course, although it is only in the teacher-student interaction that aspects of the work carried out are defined.
