Abstract

The recognition of Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) by Law 10.436/02 as the natural language of the Brazilian deaf community ensures the right to education in their native language. However, there are still gaps in the creation of visual teaching materials for teaching Libras as L1. This qualitative and bibliographic study, based on authors such as Strobel (2008), Marques (1999), and Alves (2020), investigated the production of visual materials in Libras teaching in CAPES and UFPB journals (2013-2023). The analysis revealed a limited presence of research addressing visuality, an essential aspect in teaching deaf people. In light of these findings, the study presents visual materials developed during the UFCG's Letras Libras course, emphasizing the importance of methodological practices that integrate visuality into the acquisition of Libras, respecting the subjectivity of the deaf community.
