Abstract

This article considers ways of teaching deaf adults to create sign language poetry, contributing to research on creative writing. Research on creative writing in Brazil is still scarce (Abed, 2021) and in the area of Libras, we have found no record of teaching literature in Libras to adults. As a theoretical basis, we highlight the theory of deaf pedagogy by Ladd and Gonçalves (2011). In considering the ways deaf people learn, we describe the effectiveness of using a specific poem in a community outreach course on poetry in Libras. Two deaf university teachers delivered the course to deaf adults fluent in Libras. We analyze the poem Tree, by the British deaf poet Paul Scott, highlighting the poetic resources it contains as a model for teaching a poem in sign language. We show the poetic results achieved by applying this poem in a learning space of fluent deaf teachers with deaf learners.
