Abstract

This article analyzes a Portuguese Language textbook for the final years of elementary education in the context of the PNLD, approaching it as a material artifact embedded in public education policy and as a site where institutions respond to demands for diversity. It argues that textbooks legitimize certain forms of knowledge while marginalizing others, producing epistemic exclusion and unequal distributions of voices and repertoires within school-sanctioned knowledge. Drawing on the pedagogy of multiliteracies and an evidence-oriented analytical instrument, the study examines five contiguous pages from a textbook unit focused on class, race, and gender. The analysis reveals continuities, partial incorporations, and shifts in the hierarchization of knowledge through movements of conservation, hybridization, and reconfiguration. In doing so, it contributes to debates on public education policy, diversity, and efforts to confront inequality.
