Abstract

This article aims to present the writing in SignWriting (SW) and the translation into Portuguese of a poem signed in Libras, entitled “Awakening to poetry”. This article articulates theoretical notions of Deaf Literature as a cultural and identity manifestation (Karnopp, 2010), the history and flexibility of writing Libras in SW (Sutton, 2001; Morais, 2016) and poetic translation from the perspective of transpoetization and transcreation (Benjamin, 2020; Campos, 2015) applied to the Libras-Portuguese language pair. The writing for SW occurred in several stages where the Libras parameters were identified. As a result, the signed video “Awakening to poetry” was written in SignWriting and translated into Portuguese when the intended mode was identified through manual and non-manual elements expressed in Libras such as rhyme and rhythm.
